CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

PIPER

“Did you guys hear us?” Leo asked when we reached the spot where Bethany, Lakynn, and Henry still stood. My clothes were soaked through with sweat, sticking to every inch of me. I pulled my tunic away from my chest, fanning myself rapidly.

“Yeah.” Henry gave an exhausted sigh. “Yeah, the key didn’t work for the front door. Did you try both locks?”

“Mhm.”

I’d never been one to say I told you so, but let’s just say I was thankful for the darkness that was currently concealing my defiant expression.

“Okay, we need to try the rest of the doors, then. What about the study? And all of the doors down the other hallway?” Lakynn said.

Without another word, we moved quickly, first checking the study door.

“No,” Leo said, trying to twist the key to no avail. “Let’s check the other hallway.”

“Maybe someone should check the drawers in the kitchen again,” Lakynn said as we neared the second hall. “We checked them earlier for a screwdriver, but have we checked them to see if there’s a… I don’t know, like a panic button or something? With all this security, maybe there’s something to get us out.”

A light illuminated the dark room and I could see her then, Bethany and Henry still standing next to her.

“Good idea,” Bethany said.

“I’ll go with you,” Henry agreed.

The three of them were sneaking off together again, but why?

Could they somehow have something to do with this? Could they believe we did?

I didn’t even want to be at this thing in the first place. How could they suspect me? If it wasn’t for them, Shane and I would be on a date somewhere with air conditioning.

Just the thought was enough to make me sick.

I didn’t want to believe it. They were my friends; they’d been my friends most of my life. I couldn’t believe they could be dangerous or that they could think I would ever do anything like this, but what if I was wrong?

Someone had put us here.

Someone who knew the truth about what happened that night.

The more I thought about it, I knew I couldn’t leave them alone. When they turned to walk away, I followed them.

To my surprise, they didn’t protest. At first, I wasn’t even sure they’d noticed me, but once they had, nothing in their demeanor seemed to change.

In the kitchen, we worked in silence, each with our phones turned back on as we searched through drawers and pulled out silverware and various kitchen utensils.

Being alone was making me paranoid.

These were my friends, including Shane, who I’d all but shut out of the night’s activities, despite the fact that I was the person he was closest to here. I couldn’t remember the last time I spoke to him, in fact. If it weren’t for me, he wouldn’t have been invited at all. He’d be somewhere safe. Cool. If anyone was angry or suspicious, it should’ve been him.

And, if he did get angry, if I did lose him, it would be all my fault.

I should’ve trusted my gut and avoided the dinner party altogether.
